Consultation on Proposed Winwick Pass Monument

The Battle of Winwick Society’s aim is to promote the importance of the Battle of Winwick and the history behind it. The battle that occurred in the area of Newton-le-Willows and Winwick on 19 August 1648 between the Scottish Engagers invaders and an army of the English Parliament was nationally significant and led to a period when the three Kingdoms were governed as a republic.

Due to the importance of this battle, Historic England approved the recognition and protection of the battle site and designated it the 47th Registered Battlefield on 31 January 2018.

As part of its aims to make the battle more well known the Battle of Winwick Society want to raise a monument on Hermitage Green Village Green with information boards placed around it, together with a bench. The monument would be a point of focus for people wishing to visit the battlefield and it would serve to mark this important event.

Winwick Parish Council intends to hold a public consultation meeting about the proposals at 7pm on Tuesday 23 September 2025, prior to its next scheduled Council meeting.  Residents are welcome to come along to ask questions about what is proposed and to make your views known.

A link is provided below to a public notice, which confirms arrangements for the consultation meeting and which gives some historical background about the importance of the battle.  (Please note that the supporting petition is no longer available to sign, as the Carnival date has now passed).
